Longmen Grottoes: Tickets, Route and Luoyang Transport Guide

Longmen Grottoes stretches along both banks of the Yi River south of central Luoyang. A first visit should prioritise the West Hill carvings and Fengxian Temple, then cross the river for the wider view from East Hill before continuing to Xiangshan Temple and Bai Garden if time allows. The official site currently includes all four areas in the daytime visit.

Current daytime ticket, hours and booking

At the time of this review, the official Longmen Grottoes website lists a CNY 90 full-price daytime ticket and CNY 45 half-price ticket. It shows summer-season entry from 08:00, ticket sales ending at 17:30, final checks at 18:00 and clearing at 19:00. In the winter season, sales end at 16:30, final checks at 17:00 and clearing at 18:00.

These times can be replaced by special-event, weather or holiday notices. Recheck the official page on the day before travelling, particularly if planning a late-afternoon visit. Night tours are a separate product and do not necessarily open every daytime area.

The site uses reservations and identity checks. Enter the exact document details requested by the official booking channel and carry that original document. A passport concession is not guaranteed merely because a similar Chinese-ID concession appears online; confirm eligibility before paying.

Luoyang Longmen station is the simplest rail arrival

The official transport guide places Luoyang Longmen high-speed railway station about a short drive from the scenic area and lists bus 71 as a public-transport option. Bus routes, stop names and traffic conditions can change, so confirm the live map and allow time to reach the correct visitor-service entrance.

Luoyang’s older urban sights and food streets are farther north. Staying near the station helps an early grotto visit; staying centrally is better for an evening in the city. Neither location changes the need for the final road or bus leg.

Walk West Hill first, then use East Hill for context

Most of the major carving sequence lies on West Hill. Follow the signed one-way flow through smaller niches and larger caves rather than going directly to the largest statue group. The changing scale and style are part of the story.

Fengxian Temple is the visual centre of the route. After the West Hill section, cross the river if the bridge and East Hill path are open. The opposite bank gives a wider view of the cliff, which is difficult to understand from directly below the carvings.

The official daytime area also includes Xiangshan Temple and Bai Garden. They add walking and steps, so keep them optional if the train schedule is tight. Electric carts operate on parts of the approach according to the official site, but they do not remove the stairways within the heritage route.

What the carvings represent

UNESCO describes Longmen as more than 2,300 caves and niches along roughly one kilometre of limestone cliff, with almost 110,000 Buddhist stone statues, more than 60 stupas and about 2,800 inscriptions. The most intensive carving dates from the late fifth century to the mid-eighth century, linking the site to the Northern Wei and Tang periods.

That scale is why a three- or four-hour route works better than rushing from one famous figure to the next. The UNESCO World Heritage page offers concise historical context without turning the visit into an unsupported legend.

Photography rules can vary by zone, equipment and temporary conservation work. Follow posted instructions and avoid flash, tripods or touching stone where prohibited. Do not step around barriers for a closer angle.

Build Longmen into a wider heritage route
