Mogao Caves Dunhuang: Official Booking, Visit Types and Rules

The Mogao Caves visit begins at the Digital Exhibition Center outside Dunhuang, not at the cliff itself. Visitors reserve a timed, real-name product, complete the ticket check and any included film program, then use the official shuttle to the protected cave area. The regular and emergency visits are different products, and foreign-passport holders have a dedicated official booking path.

Use only the official Mogao booking channels

The Dunhuang Academy’s current annual notice says Mogao uses timed real-name reservations and daily capacity limits. It directs individual visitors to the “莫高窟参观预约网” WeChat service account or mini-program. Foreign-passport holders should choose “Ticket Booking” from the service account’s reservation menu.

The Academy has also stated that it has not authorised third parties to sell or obtain Mogao tickets. Do not send passport details or extra payment to a person claiming an internal allocation. Start with the Dunhuang Academy’s official annual visitor notice or the Mogao reservation website.

Carry the original identity document used for booking. The annual notice asks regular-ticket visitors to arrive at the Digital Exhibition Center at least 30 minutes before their reserved time and obtain the required paper booking-information slip before checks.

Regular and emergency visits are not equivalent

The official annual notice sets a 6,000-ticket daily limit for the regular visit. That product includes the Exhibition Hall 1 digital film and eight physical caves. The emergency model, activated during the busy season when required, has a larger daily limit and includes four physical caves without the same standard program.

Special caves are limited separately and change with conservation conditions. They are not a guaranteed add-on to every ticket. The Academy publishes the current pool of ordinary and special caves, but the exact caves seen by a group can vary. Do not book on the assumption that one numbered cave will be included.

Prices are intentionally not reproduced here because the accessible annual notice defines products and capacity without presenting a single durable price table. Read the amount and inclusions in the official checkout before payment.

Current seasonal hours and the first-stop rule

For the current annual schedule, the Academy lists 08:00-18:00 from 1 April through 30 November, with final checks at 16:10. From 1 December through 31 March, it lists 09:00-17:00, with final checks at 15:10. Later notices can override those times, so recheck before a flight or train connection.

The Digital Exhibition Center at 8899 Yangguan East Road is the required first stop. The protected cave area has no public ticket office or visitor parking. Driving directly to the cliff risks missing the reserved check-in and shuttle sequence.

Photography and video are forbidden inside the caves. Large luggage, drones, pets and hazardous items are also restricted under the annual notice. These rules protect fragile wall paintings and keep the narrow interiors manageable.

What the visit covers historically

The cave complex developed over roughly a millennium along the Silk Roads. UNESCO describes 492 cells and cave sanctuaries, about 45,000 square metres of murals and more than 2,000 painted sculptures. The Mogao World Heritage page explains the artistic exchange represented by the site.

Because cave interiors are dark and group movement is controlled, background reading improves the visit. Focus on how painting, sculpture, architecture and donor records changed over time rather than expecting a self-directed gallery. Follow the guide’s light and movement instructions, and do not touch walls or screens.

Getting to Dunhuang and planning the rest of the stay

Dunhuang has an airport and a conventional railway station; Liuyuan South is a more distant high-speed option that requires a road transfer. Routes and frequencies vary by season. Check rail inventory on China Railway 12306 and confirm flights in both directions before reserving a non-changeable cave slot.

The RelaxInChina 12306 guide helps with passport verification. Allow at least two nights in Dunhuang if you also want the dunes, Crescent Lake or a western-route excursion. Do not schedule the cave visit immediately before a departure: ticket processing, films, shuttles and controlled cave groups make the finish time less flexible than a museum visit.

For comparison with other Buddhist cave landscapes, the Datong and Yungang guide and Terracotta Army visitor guide provide distinct historical contexts rather than interchangeable attraction lists.

Frequently asked questions

Can a foreign passport be used to book Mogao Caves?

Yes. The official annual notice directs foreign-passport holders to the “Ticket Booking” path in the Mogao reservation WeChat service account. Use the exact passport details and bring the original document.

Should I buy a regular or emergency visit?

Choose the regular visit when available because it includes the standard film program and eight caves. The emergency product is a reduced four-cave route used to expand capacity during busy periods.

Can I photograph inside the Mogao caves?

No. The Academy’s visitor rules prohibit photography and video inside the caves. Use exterior photos and official digital resources instead of attempting a hidden recording.

The ticket sequence is part of the visit

A successful Mogao trip follows the official process: reserve through the named channel, arrive early at the Digital Exhibition Center, keep the identity document and paper slip available, and accept that cave selection follows conservation needs. That structure protects the art and prevents the most common booking mistake—going directly to the cliff with an unofficial ticket.
