A market, museum shop, certificate or salesperson does not by itself guarantee authenticity, material, origin or investment value. Decide what the item will be used for, compare workmanship and request an itemized receipt. For tea, ceramics, silk, electronics, alcohol, antiques and wildlife-derived materials, the evidence and transport risks differ. Check airline packing rules, China export controls and the destination country’s customs and biosecurity rules before buying. Miao silver from Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village in Guizhou and Bai silver from Dali Old Town in Yunnan are hammered, not cast, and the patterns are regional rather than generic. Pieces are priced per gram against the day’s silver rate, plus workmanship, so check the spot price on your phone first. Ask directly whether it is miao yin — a bright white alloy that is only partly silver — or stamped 999 fine silver, since the price gap is large and both are sold side by side. Both towns are worth building into a southwest itinerary rather than a day trip.

Can I take antiques or old jade out of China?
Is it cheaper to buy Chinese brands in China than to order them online at home?
For tea, porcelain, silk, tailoring, calligraphy supplies and outdoor gear, dramatically — often half or less, and the selection is not comparable. For phones and laptops the gap has closed, and international warranty coverage on a China-market model is usually nil. Buy the crafts here and the electronics wherever your warranty works.
Can I ship purchases home instead of carrying them?
Yes, and for ceramics it is often smarter. SF Express and China Post EMS both handle international parcels from walk-in branches — budget several hundred yuan for a 5kg box to Europe or North America, and ask SF staff to pack fragile items, which they do properly for a small fee. Note that shipped goods cannot be claimed for the departure tax refund, since the refund requires you to carry the items out yourself.
Pack for inspection and the trip home
Photograph fragile or high-value items and their receipts before packing. Keep batteries, liquids, blades, food, plant material and cultural objects separate until airline and customs rules are checked. A seller’s packing method may protect an item in a car but not through checked-baggage handling. If provenance matters, preserve the maker’s name, material description and sales document, while recognizing that paperwork still does not independently authenticate an object.
