What to Buy in China: Quality Checks, Receipts and Taking It Home

Choose purchases you can assess, carry and legally take into your next destination. Tea, textiles, small design goods and modern crafts can make useful gifts, but the right choice depends on quality, packaging, warranty and import rules—not only the shop’s story.

Choose the job before choosing the souvenir

Avoid making a high-value purchase because a seller says it is rare, ancient or an investment. Those are claims to verify, not a discount to act on quickly. A receipt is useful evidence of a transaction; it is not an authenticity certificate or export permit.

Decide a spending limit and whether you have baggage space before entering the shop. A bargain that needs expensive shipping or overweight baggage may not be a bargain at all.

Ask the unit and the total

A displayed price can refer to a piece, set, weight or size. Ask before a tea tasting, custom order or demonstration creates an obligation.

Compare like with like: the same weight of tea, fabric composition, size or number of pieces. A low headline number is not meaningful if the quantity is different.

For a custom item, put the specification, completion date, collection/shipping arrangement and payment stages in writing. Do not assume a standard shop return applies to something made to order.

Tea: buy the product, not the performance

Ask the type, net weight, origin claim, packing date or shelf-life information and storage advice. Compare the same quantity between sellers. A polished tasting does not authenticate origin or quality.

For a gift, sealed packaging with a readable label is easier to assess and carry than an unidentified loose mixture. Check your destination’s rules before choosing food or plant-related products. Tea, herbs, seeds and mixtures are not necessarily treated the same way.

Confirm the tasting’s price first. Do not follow an unsolicited invitation to an unfamiliar venue because the host speaks English or says there is a special event. If a bill is unclear, request an itemized explanation and retain the records.

Textiles and clothing: specification beats a label

Check fabric composition, measurements, stitching, care instructions and whether the item you receive is the one you inspected. A verbal “silk” claim does not replace a clear description of the actual product.

Try on clothing where appropriate and confirm alterations before paying. A tailoring quote should identify the fabric, garment, fittings, delivery date and correction arrangements. A tight departure schedule leaves little time to fix problems.

For bulky quilts or bedding, price packing and baggage as well as the item. Confirm whether the seller’s shipping service reaches your destination and what it does not include. Duties, handling and a delayed delivery should not be hidden inside “free shipping.”

Crafts: favour modern pieces you can describe

Inspect a ceramic item for cracks, chips, uneven joins and the packaging needed for travel. Ask whether it is sold for decorative or food-contact use, and seek appropriate product information rather than assuming that a beautiful glaze proves suitability.

For jade, silver or another high-value material, do not improvise an authenticity test from a travel blog. Use qualified independent verification and clear documentation if the value matters. A shop’s certificate can have a limited scope; read what it actually certifies.

Avoid antiques or cultural-relic claims unless export eligibility and any required permissions are settled with the competent authorities. This edition deliberately omits universal age cutoffs and a promise that any particular item can leave China. Modern-looking, newly purchased and legally exportable are different questions.

Electronics: think about the country where you will use it

Before paying, confirm:

• Exact model and genuine manufacturer identity.
• Plug, power specification and accessories.
• Language, regional software and account compatibility.
• Network bands or service compatibility where relevant.
• Warranty territory and how a repair would be handled abroad.
• Return conditions and the seller’s contact details.
• Airline/security rules for the actual battery or power bank.

Do not assume that a mainland warranty covers your home country, or that a domestic-flight battery rule is identical to an international airline’s rule. Check the carrier and security instructions for each leg. Cheap electronics are not useful if the product cannot be supported or transported.

Where to shop: match the seller to the purchase

An official brand store may suit a specific model and documented warranty. A department store can make comparing brands and receipts easier. A craft shop can suit a clearly described modern piece. Scenic-area stalls may be convenient for inexpensive souvenirs but are not proof of authenticity.

No shop in this edition is recommended as personally tested. Compare written terms, product information and the total price. The seller who can answer your questions clearly is a better starting point than a dramatic “today only” discount.

For Shanghai, a practical half-day sketch is a short Yuyuan-area browse, lunch, then one part of East Nanjing Road. These are separate stops, not a measured route. Keep a non-shopping companion’s alternative and meeting point clear.

If that companion wants a museum, confirm the People’s Square building’s current exhibition arrangements on the museum’s visitor page. Do not describe it as an interchangeable visit to the permanent collection at the East building.

Tax refund: ask before buying, not at the airport

China’s departure tax-refund programme applies to eligible goods from participating stores and approved exit arrangements. It is not a discount at every shop. The Shanghai government’s policy overview describes store paperwork, unused goods and customs verification. The State Taxation Administration’s newer policy information should also be consulted for current arrangements.

Before paying, ask the store whether your purchase qualifies, what documents it will provide and whether your planned departure port can process the claim. Keep the required invoice/application and goods available for inspection. Do not pack them in checked baggage before resolving the inspection sequence.

An instant-refund arrangement can have additional conditions. Confirm its deadline, departure requirements, guarantee/payment conditions and what happens if you do not complete the process. Do not treat it as unconditional cash back.

This edition omits a universal net percentage and refund-time promise. Ask for the calculation and fees applicable to your goods and route. A shop’s participation does not guarantee that your individual claim will be accepted.

Taking it home: three separate rulebooks

1. China exit rules: check restricted goods, cultural items and required documents.
2. Transport rules: check cabin/checked baggage, batteries, liquids, weight and packing with the operator.
3. Destination entry rules: check import declarations, duty, food, plants, animal products and protected materials.

Use your destination’s own authority. Useful starting points are US CBP, UK personal-use import guidance, Canada’s declaration guidance and Australian Border Force.

These links are lookup points, not a summarized allowance for every nationality or route. Check the exact product and how you arrive. The store saying “tourists buy this all the time” is not customs permission.

Receipts, payment and a problem purchase

Keep the item description, seller, date, amount and payment reference. For an expensive item, retain the specification and any warranty/return agreement too. A payment confirmation alone may not describe what was sold.

Check the amount and any wallet fee before paying. Use a supported merchant payment or another accepted method; see Alipay preparation.

If an item is wrong or damaged, contact the seller promptly with the records and use the applicable terms. Do not assume a blanket no-questions return or chargeback success. If shipping it, photograph the actual condition and packaging with consent where needed, and retain tracking details without exposing private documents publicly.
