How Much Does a China Trip Cost? A Budget You Can Actually Check

A useful China trip budget separates accommodation, daily spending and actual intercity tickets. It states whether the figure is per room, per person or per vehicle, and lists what is excluded. Start with planning ranges, then replace them with prices for your dates before booking.

Editorial budget edition, reviewed 5 October 2026. All ranges below are planning examples, not market quotes or verified current selling prices. Amounts are RMB per person unless stated otherwise. No current exchange rate is assumed.

Choose the basis before choosing a number

The examples use two adults sharing one room, with a per-person allocation of that room cost. They do not describe a solo traveller paying for the whole room or a family whose child/extra-bed conditions differ.

Three travel styles give you different things to price:

Style Accommodation Local travel Experiences
Economy Budget accommodation Public transport, walking Selective paid admission
Comfort Mid-range room Rail plus some taxis A few booked experiences
Private service Higher-end room Priced car/driver service Priced guide and activities

These names are planning categories, not hotel classifications or a service offered as a package. A private driver does not automatically include a guide, admission or overtime. Obtain written inclusions when buying any service.

A fourteen-day base, with the missing part visible

Example route: Beijing, Xi’an, Chengdu and Shanghai, with a Suzhou side trip. It has 14 days and 13 hotel nights. The following ranges are inherited editorial allowances from the reviewed planning pack, not a current booking search.

Base cost per person Economy Comfort Private service
Accommodation, 13 nights 1,630–2,930 4,550–7,800 11,700–22,750
Food, 14 days 1,400–2,520 3,500–6,300 8,400–16,800
Local transport 210–560 700–1,680 6,300–11,200
Airport transfers 20–50 140–200 Included in local allowance
Admission, guides, experiences 420–1,400 1,680–4,200 7,700–15,400
Base before intercity tickets 3,680–7,460 10,570–20,180 34,100–66,150

The airport-transfer rows are example allowances, not a quote for a specific airport, terminal, time or vehicle. Price your actual transfers and replace these rows if necessary. Avoid counting a private-service airport ride twice.

The base is not a complete fourteen-day trip price. Add T, your actual per-person intercity total, separately:

Travel leg What to compare Your price
Beijing → Xi’an Exact train, class, station pair and terms ___
Xi’an → Chengdu Exact service and class ___
Chengdu → Shanghai Rail versus flight, including bags and transfers ___
Shanghai → Suzhou → Shanghai Both tickets and the actual station pair ___ + ___
T Total of the rows above ___

Do not price Chengdu–Shanghai by multiplying one short-journey allowance. Duration and the cost of bags, transfers or a lost sightseeing day can change the choice. Use your actual booking search.

On-the-ground planning subtotal = base + T. A chosen 10% transport/daily-cost buffer gives 1.10 × (base + T). Add omitted items below and international flights separately. If an omitted cost also needs a contingency, apply that explicitly rather than pretending it is already inside the formula.

A smaller seven-day example

For a seven-day trip with six nights, build the same rows instead of halving a fourteen-day total. Shorter trips can still contain expensive intercity tickets or airport transfers.

Here is an arithmetic example, not a current price sample:

Line Assumption Per-person amount
Room RMB 400 per room × 6 nights ÷ 2 adults 1,200
Food RMB 130 × 7 days 910
Local travel RMB 30 × 7 days 210
Paid sights Selected allowance 300
Intercity tickets Placeholder to replace with actual quotes 700
Airport transfers Placeholder for your route 100
Example subtotal Sum 3,420
10% chosen buffer 342 3,762 including buffer

This does not claim that you can buy those rooms, meals or tickets at those prices. Its job is to show the calculation. If the room costs RMB 800 instead, the per-person room line becomes RMB 2,400 and the subtotal changes accordingly. Replace the placeholders before using the total as a spending plan.

Costs that are easy to omit

Add these lines if they apply:

  • International flights and any baggage or seat charge.
  • Visa or other entry-related fees applicable to your passport and itinerary.
  • Travel insurance based on the activities and cover you need.
  • Mobile data, roaming and replacement connectivity.
  • Bank/wallet charges and currency conversion.
  • Breakfast not included in the room rate.
  • Private-service overtime, parking, tolls or guide expenses not included.
  • Laundry, snacks and drinks outside the daily allowance.
  • Shopping, shipping, overweight baggage and destination import costs.
  • An extra night or alternative transfer if a connection fails.

Do not subtract a hoped-for tax refund from the money needed for a purchase. Eligibility, documents, exit arrangements and refund conditions must be satisfied separately. Shopping in China explains what to ask before paying.

Compare hotels and transport on the same basis

Hotel rates are normally presented for a room or bed. Check guest count, dates, breakfast, taxes, deposit and cancellation. A price from another date is not a quote for yours. Where to stay in Shanghai helps you compare the location cost as well as the room.

Rail prices need a station pair, service, date and class. Use 12306 for the booking rules and actual ticket search. A city-name result can include several stations. For the side trip, start with Shanghai to Suzhou station choices.

For flights, compare the fare including bags and the airport transfer. A cheaper ticket from a less convenient airport can cost more overall. Check the airline’s change/refund conditions rather than assuming they match the railway’s.

For a car or guide, ask what the written price includes and how extra time is charged. A daily number without service hours, route and vehicle/party basis is not a usable quote.

Solo, couple and family budgets differ

A solo traveller pays the full room cost unless booking a separately priced bed. Do not take the two-sharing example and assume that its room allocation applies unchanged.

A couple can share a room and some taxi rides, but each usually needs separate meals, tickets and personal services. Not every line should be divided by two.

For a family, price the actual ages, room occupancy and ticket conditions. Child concessions differ by venue and service. A discounted admission does not establish a free extra bed or a train concession.

For a group, state whether a private service is per vehicle or per person. Check capacity and bags. Splitting a vehicle quote among more people only works if that vehicle can carry the actual party.

Keep one currency and one source date

Work in RMB first. If you need a home-currency total, use a dated rate and label it. Your bank or payment service can use a different rate and add charges; a reference rate is not a guaranteed settlement rate.

Record the quote date and travel date separately. A rail search made today for next week is not a year-round fare. Do not combine a future-effective timetable with an earlier journey.

If you pay partly in HKD and partly in RMB for a Hong Kong–Shenzhen trip, keep the two ledgers separate until you convert them using one stated rate.

Where to spend first when the budget is tight

Prioritize usable logistics: a suitable hotel entrance, reliable arrival/departure transport, data and a payment fallback. Saving a little on a room can be poor value if it creates repeated long taxis.

Choose paid activities selectively. A neighbourhood walk and riverfront visit can replace an optional paid experience, but do not cut the transport buffer needed for your flight or train.

Leave shopping outside the core travel budget. A gift purchase should not consume the money reserved for getting to the airport.

If a card fails, use the backup and resolve the account issue through official channels. Alipay preparation covers the checks without assuming every card will work.

Frequently asked questions

Is the fourteen-day table a quote?

No. It is an editorial base, excludes intercity tickets and other listed items, and must be replaced with actual prices.

Why not publish one cost per day?

A single daily figure hides hotel sharing, transport legs and service inclusions. Those can dominate the trip cost.

Does the buffer include international flights?

Not in the stated formula. Flights and other omitted items are separate; choose an appropriate contingency for them explicitly.

Can I convert the examples using an old dollar rate?

Use a stated current planning rate and expect your issuer’s settlement to differ. This edition makes no exchange-rate promise.

Save the budget worksheet

The A5 card has the three fourteen-day base ranges and space for actual intercity tickets, omitted costs and your chosen contingency. Fill those in before treating it as a complete total.

Evidence and limits

The table’s base sums and the seven-day example were recalculated locally. They are planning arithmetic, not new hotel or fare research. China Railway’s FAQ, actual operators and your current sellers provide the rules and quotes. Unverified fixed metro/taxi tariffs, future-effective cross-border fare examples and old currency conversions have been omitted.
