Three Days in Chongqing: Food, Night Views and Easy Transport

Source-based edition, reviewed 5 October 2026. This itinerary is not field-tested or certified step-free. Check current venue access and your actual transport.

For three days in Chongqing, give each day one area: the Jiefangbei end of the Yuzhong peninsula, a museum day with optional Liziba, then the Yangtze south bank or Ciqikou before departure. Leave room for a rest and use a taxi for awkward uphill legs. Places close on a phone map may be on different road levels.

This itinerary is for first-time visitors who want food, a river view and a manageable route. It is a planning sketch, not a walked or step-free route. Check station exits, lifts, attraction operations and your departure buffer before you travel.

The three days at a glance

Day Main area Plan Lower-climb alternative
1 Jiefangbei / eastern Yuzhong Jiefangbei, optional Shibati, hot pot, Hongyadong after dark Skip stairway descent; use a road-accessible pickup point
2 Museum and Jialing-side route Three Gorges Museum, rest, optional Liziba; one night view Taxi to museum entrance; ask about current Liziba access or skip it
3 Yangtze south bank or Shapingba Cableway if operating, Longmenhao and return; alternatively Ciqikou One short visit and a departure transfer instead of both branches

Do not put Ciqikou after every other Day 3 stop just because it fits a list. It is a separate western trip. Keep the route closest to your actual departure station or airport.

First rule: check the entrance level

A map pin alone does not tell you whether a hotel entrance is on the upper road or beside the river. Ask the hotel for the Chinese name, full address, car-accessible entrance and nearest useful station exit.

In this guide, “lower-climb” means a suggested way to avoid a long staircase. It does not mean wheelchair-accessible, lift-verified or measured flat walking. Small-scale elevation data and a map’s walking estimate cannot prove those things.

Situation Practical choice Limit
Short walk in the same street area Walk with a rest stop Check steps, heat and wet paving
Travel between districts or river banks Metro where the route is useful Interchanges and exits may themselves involve stairs
Heavy bags, uphill return or late arrival Official taxi / a supported ride-hailing service Pickup pin must be on a road a car can reach
Restricted mobility Ask the venue/hotel about the exact accessible entrance Do not rely on the route label here

“电梯在哪里?” means “Where is the lift?” “请到这个入口。” means “Please take me to this entrance.” Show the Chinese address as well as the map.

Choose a base and an arrival route

Jiefangbei (解放碑) is a useful first-visit base for the east-end sights, but confirm the entrance road and evening taxi access. Guanyinqiao (观音桥) suits a shopping/dining base across the Jialing, with rides into Yuzhong. A hotel by Chongqing North (重庆北站) can suit an early train; it is not the same thing as a sightseeing base.

Ask the hotel directly about passport check-in, late arrival and luggage storage before booking. Hotel registration and property-specific check-in are separate from this sightseeing itinerary.

Airport and railway-station names matter

On your booking Chinese name to save What to check
Jiangbei Airport, Terminal 2 江北机场T2航站楼 Current rail/bus options for your destination; full-route and transfer last services
Jiangbei Airport, Terminal 3 江北机场T3航站楼 Current rail/bus options; follow terminal signs to rail or official taxi
Chongqing North 重庆北站 South or North Square; your actual arrival hall and useful metro entrance
Chongqing West 重庆西站 Route and travel time to your exact hotel
Chongqing East 重庆东站 Current branch-line / transfer arrangement and route to your hotel

No exact airport first/last train is quoted in this version. It has not been confirmed for this edition. Check the Chongqing Rail Transit timetable, station panel or staffed desk for your date and direction. A late airport train does not guarantee the interchange still works.

Allow for baggage, terminal walking and passport lanes rather than treating map travel time as arrival time at the hotel. If the useful rail connection has ended, follow signs to the official taxi rank or designated ride-hailing area; do not accept an unsolicited ride in the hall.

For tickets, match the Chinese railway-station name on 12306. North, West and East are not interchangeable. Use the booked station’s current instructions for the actual arrival/departure hall.

Day 1: Jiefangbei, optional stairs and Hongyadong

Start with Jiefangbei’s monument and surrounding streets. Add Shibati (十八梯) if you want the stairway district and are comfortable with steps. Treat the descent and the way back up as separate decisions. A taxi back to a road-level hotel entrance may suit you better than retracing all the stairs.

Return to the hotel or a café before dinner. That rest is part of the route, not spare time to fill with another sight.

After dinner, go to Hongyadong (洪崖洞). Choose either the upper-level approach around Cangbai Road (沧白路) or a road-accessible riverside viewpoint. Do not follow a map pin straight across a height difference.

There is no guaranteed lights-on/off time in this version. Lighting and access need a date-specific check. Check that day’s local notice and staff directions. The Qiansimen Bridge (千厮门大桥) walkway is optional: access can change under crowd control. Stay behind barriers and do not stop on a vehicle lane for a photo.

Rain or lower-climb version

Skip Shibati’s descent, shorten the open-air walk and keep dinner near your hotel. In heavy rain, do not rely on a wet bridge viewpoint. An indoor meal and a different evening view are reasonable replacements.

Day 2: Three Gorges Museum, rest, optional Liziba

Morning: museum first

The Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum (重庆中国三峡博物馆) is at 人民路236号. Its standing visitor rules list free basic exhibitions and standard hours of 09:00–17:00, stopping entry after 16:00, with Monday closure except statutory holidays. Read special-date notices too. Museum visitor rules

A 30 September 2025 notice removed advance reservation from 1 October and asks visitors to bring valid ID and follow crowd guidance. Bring your passport and check current announcements; no reservation does not mean no queue. Museum notice

Allow a morning rather than promising a fixed tour duration. For the approach, compare the current station exits around Zengjiayan (曾家岩) and Daliting (大礼堂), or take a taxi to the museum’s road entrance. This review has not verified a lift or flat path from either station.

The Great Hall square can be a short exterior stop. Admission to another venue and its opening hours are separate from access to the square.

Filming: the museum’s rules prohibit gallery video filming and flash, selfie sticks and tripods. Use permitted exterior footage for YouTube unless you obtain the necessary permission; do not present an unauthorized interior video as the default shot.

Afternoon: Liziba only if access works

Liziba (李子坝) is the train-through-building stop on Line 2. See it from the permitted public viewing area, not the road.

Access and station arrangements can change. This edition does not promise that a particular hall, platform section or lift is open on your date. Check current operator/station notices and ask staff before travelling.

If steps or the detour make this unsuitable, skip Liziba and keep the museum/rest day. A taxi near the viewing platform is not proof of step-free access.

Evening: choose one view

  • Chaotianmen (朝天门): check access to the river-confluence public area. Do not assume a map pin indicates the open entrance.
  • Two-river cruise (两江游): use the exact pier, departure and vessel details on your booking. A generic “Chaotianmen” taxi destination can be too vague.
  • Nanshan One Tree (南山一棵树): only go after confirming opening, ticket and return transport. Fog can remove the point of the trip.

No current official Nanshan price or final departure is quoted here. If conditions are poor, keep a longer dinner rather than promising a view you may not see.

Day 3: south bank or Ciqikou, then leave

Option A: cableway and Longmenhao

If the Yangtze River Cableway (长江索道) is operating, check its official mini-program or staffed counter for that date’s opening, actual ticket price, maintenance and queue. A published government price ceiling is not necessarily the selling price, and past seasonal hours are not a permanent timetable.

Decide whether you need one-way or return before buying. You can continue from the south bank by another mode; a return ticket is useful only if you will ride it back.

Visit Longmenhao Old Street (龙门浩老街) and choose a short section of Nanbin Road (南滨路) if the height change and weather suit you. Allow for the climb or road transfer back. Cafés may not be open when an early cableway ride arrives.

Option B: Ciqikou

Use Ciqikou (磁器口) as a separate half-day branch. It suits a western route better than adding it after an already full south-bank morning. Check crowd conditions, your bags and the transfer to the departure station. Skip it if the connection is tight.

Departure buffer

Write down the flight/train time, station/terminal, required arrival time, live transfer estimate and an additional buffer. Use your carrier’s instructions, not a universal number from an itinerary.

If you leave early, Day 3 can be breakfast, check-out and the transfer. Three days do not have to contain three full days of sightseeing.

Food: order a suitable hot pot, not just a famous one

Ask for a split pot (鸳鸯锅) or a non-spicy option if you do not want the red broth. “微辣” means mildly spicy, but it is not a guarantee that the dish will feel mild to you. A non-spicy side can still share utensils or kitchen preparation.

Show the server Chinese
We would like a split pot 我们想要鸳鸯锅。
Is there a non-spicy broth? 有不辣的锅底吗?
How much is the broth? 锅底多少钱?
Is this price per portion? 这个价格是一份的吗?
Please confirm the total before ordering 请先帮我们确认一下总价。
I am allergic to ___ 我对___过敏。

For an allergy, describe the ingredient and cross-contact risk, ask the kitchen and choose another meal if they cannot confirm. A translated phrase cannot guarantee safety.

Check broth, ingredient portions, dipping sauces, drinks and any extra charges before ordering. Pay through the supported merchant flow, not a person-to-person transfer assumed to work with a foreign card. See ordering food for portions, broth questions, dietary limitations and the bill.

Budget and check-before-you-go list

This version does not claim a complete verified three-day cost. Price the hotel, airport/station transfers, metro/taxis, meals and optional paid experiences separately. Keep a spare transport allowance for rain, fatigue or a missed connection. Use the China trip worksheet with your actual fares.

Before travelling:

  • Save the Chinese hotel entrance address and exact arrival/departure station.
  • Confirm passport check-in, bag storage and late arrival.
  • Check the museum’s date-specific notice and current Liziba access.
  • Check cableway operation and actual price if choosing it.
  • Pick one evening viewpoint; check weather and return transport.
  • Query the last usable transfer chain, not just one metro line.
  • Carry tested payments, backup cash, mobile data and an offline destination card.

If a plan fails

Problem Adjustment
Museum Monday closure / temporary restriction Swap the museum day after checking the new date; do not assume a holiday exception
Cableway closed or queue too long Use road/metro transport to a suitable south-bank stop, or drop the branch
Liziba detour / crowd unsuitable Skip it and keep the rest break
Rain, fog or slippery stairs Shorten outdoor sections; avoid exposed/wet viewpoints
Wrong road level for pickup Ask staff for a car-accessible entrance and reset the pin
Payment fails Ask for the supported merchant alternative or cash; do not assume a transfer works
Missed connection Contact the carrier/station and apply that ticket’s actual terms

Emergency numbers: police 110, ambulance 120, fire 119. For urgent health symptoms, seek appropriate care; do not wait for a sightseeing plan to resume.

Save the place-name card

It is a destination/checklist aid, not a navigable or accessibility-certified map.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do Chongqing without many stairs?
You can reduce climbing with shorter walks and taxis, but this route has not been tested for step-free access. Confirm the exact entrance and working lift where needed.

Should I walk every short distance shown on the map?
No. Check road levels and the return climb. Map duration is not a measurement of this itinerary.

Can I fit the cableway and Ciqikou before an afternoon train?
Not automatically. Choose one branch around your station and departure buffer.

Is a quoted cableway cap the ticket price?
No. Query the operator’s actual selling price and conditions for your date.

The useful order

Book the entry/departure logistics and a suitable hotel, then group sights by area. Keep one rest and one fallback each day. A missed attraction is easier to recover from than a wrong station or an unusable final connection.
