Yuanmingyuan, commonly called the Old Summer Palace, is a large ruins park in northwest Beijing rather than one compact monument. The Western Mansions ruins are its best-known remains, but they occupy only one part of a wider landscape of lakes, paths and archaeological sites. A practical first visit starts at the Line 4 entrance, crosses the central garden areas and reaches the Western Mansions without treating the entire park as a single photo stop.

Which ticket should you buy?
Buy the main entrance ticket if the goal is a broad park walk and the Western Mansions are optional. Choose the combined ticket if Dashuifa and the historic-garden model are definite priorities.
The combined ticket is cheaper than buying all three components separately, but it also creates a longer route. Do not add the model exhibition merely because it is included if daylight, weather or mobility makes the larger park more important.
The official concession rules include free admission for people under 18 and adults aged 60 or above with valid evidence, alongside other listed groups. How to reach Yuanmingyuan by metro
The park’s official transport page directs visitors to Yuanmingyuan station on Metro Line 4, Exit B. This serves the Qichun Garden entrance and is the simplest arrival for a first visit.
Save the park’s Chinese name, 圆明园遗址公园, for maps and signs. Several gates exist, and a ride-hailing driver may choose a different entrance if the destination is entered only as “Old Summer Palace.”

What the Old Summer Palace actually contains
The official Beijing description divides Yuanmingyuan into three historic gardens: Yuanmingyuan, Changchun Garden and Qichun Garden. Construction began in 1707 and continued under successive Qing emperors.
The site was looted and burned by Anglo-French forces in 1860. Later destruction and reuse left a landscape where many buildings survive only through foundations, fragments, records and archaeological interpretation. The European-style stone ruins in the Western Mansions are the most visible remains, not a complete summary of the former gardens.
That distinction sets the right expectation. Yuanmingyuan is best understood as a ruined cultural landscape. A visitor who arrives expecting one intact palace will miss the lakes, spatial scale and surviving traces that explain how the complex worked.
A practical three-to-four-hour route
Use this sequence as a flexible framework:
- Enter from the Line 4 side at Qichun Garden. Pick up or save the official map before moving deeper into the park.
- Walk through the central water landscape. Use the lakes and named junctions to keep your direction; the park is much larger than the ruins photographs suggest.
- Continue east toward Changchun Garden and the Western Mansions. Follow the current signs for Dashuifa and the exhibition area rather than a route copied from an old blog.
- Visit the ruins and model exhibition if included in your ticket. Treat the stonework as the final interpretive section, not the only reason for the walk.
- Choose the exit before you become tired. Returning to the Line 4 gate can require substantial backtracking, so compare the nearest open gate with your next destination.
Three to four hours is a planning range, not a park rule. A lakeside walk can be shorter, while a combined-ticket visit with exhibitions and photography can take most of a day.
How Yuanmingyuan differs from the Summer Palace
The two sites answer different questions. The Summer Palace presents a substantially preserved and restored imperial garden centred on Kunming Lake and Longevity Hill. Yuanmingyuan presents ruins, archaeology and the scale of a complex largely destroyed in the nineteenth century.
Visiting both in one day is possible for travellers comfortable with long walks, but it can flatten the meaning of each site. If only one fits, choose the Summer Palace for intact garden architecture and Yuanmingyuan for ruins, historical interpretation and a more dispersed landscape.

Morning is the easiest time for a longer route because it leaves margin before seasonal last entry. Summer can bring lotus displays but also heat, humidity and exposed walking. Carry water, wear shoes suitable for several kilometres of paved and uneven paths, and keep an offline map available. Toilets and services are spread across a large site; use them when convenient rather than waiting for the ruins zone.
