Pudong to Hongqiao Airport Transfer: Plan the Whole Connection

For a Pudong to Hongqiao airport transfer, compare the Airport Link Line with a licensed road transfer, then work backwards from the next flight’s check-in and boarding cutoffs. The train ride is only one part of the connection: you still need to clear arrival formalities, reach the station and get to the correct departure terminal.

Source-based planning guide checked on 27 October 2026; this is not a timed transfer test or a minimum-connection guarantee. The same planning method applies in reverse, but the train direction, last service and terminal approach must be checked separately.

Confirm three different destinations

Save these names with your booking:

  • PVG: Shanghai Pudong International Airport — 上海浦东国际机场.
  • SHA: Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport — 上海虹桥国际机场.
  • Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station: 上海虹桥站, a separate destination for national-rail trains.

Hongqiao Airport and Hongqiao Railway Station share a transport hub, but they are not interchangeable arrival points. A flight connection needs the airport terminal on the airline booking. An onward high-speed train needs the railway station and its own boarding arrangements.

Read the operating airline’s current terminal information for both flights. Do not choose a route solely because a map pin says “Hongqiao.” Our Hongqiao Airport guide provides the wider airport context.

What the Airport Link Line does

Shanghai’s official transport guide, updated June 2026, describes an approximately 40-minute airport rail connection and a separate fare structure, with a full journey priced at CNY 26. These are published rail-service figures, not a terminal-to-terminal connection allowance; confirm current fares and operations before travel.

The city’s Airport Link Line guide identifies the airport stations as Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2 and Pudong Airport T1 & T2. Look for 机场联络线 on signs. It is a different service from Metro Line 2 and the maglev.

That distinction matters if your flight uses Hongqiao Terminal 1. Reaching the line’s Terminal 2 station does not complete your journey to Terminal 1. Ask the airport or airline for the current terminal-transfer route and add it to your plan.

The maglev ends at Longyang Road rather than Hongqiao. Do not board it expecting a direct two-airport connection. If you choose any multi-leg alternative, map every leg and its operating hours before starting.

Calculate the time you can actually use

Open both flight bookings and build this sequence in local time:

  1. Scheduled landing at the first airport.
  2. Disembarkation and any immigration, baggage reclaim and customs required for your itinerary.
  3. Movement from the arrival area to rail or the designated road pickup.
  4. Waiting and the actual transport journey.
  5. Movement from the destination station or drop-off to the correct airline counter.
  6. Baggage acceptance, security and boarding before their respective cutoffs.

Ask the airline which arrival procedures apply and whether you must collect baggage. Do not infer through-checking from a shared airline logo or from both flights appearing in one app.

An illustrative calculation: a four-hour gap between scheduled landing and the next departure is not four hours of ground-transport time. If the onward carrier closes check-in before departure, that time is unavailable; all the arrival and transfer tasks must fit before that cutoff. This example does not establish that a four-hour connection is sufficient.

Choose rail or road by the complete task

Consider the Airport Link Line when it is operating, you can manage your bags and the destination station gives a practical route to your terminal. Check the current departure display and ticketing instructions. Buying a ticket does not confirm you will meet the airline cutoff.

Consider a licensed taxi or confirmed transfer when carrying difficult luggage, travelling with someone who needs a simpler route, or when rail is not operating. Use the official taxi queue or the designated pickup for a booking you made. A road transfer replaces the rail leg; it does not remove arrival procedures or check-in time.

Avoid chasing the shortest advertised time. A fast train can involve station access and terminal walking. A car can involve pickup waits and road congestion. Compare the option you can execute now with the bags, payment and assistance you actually have.

If step-free access or assistance is essential, ask both airports and the carrier about the specific route in advance. This guide has not verified an uninterrupted accessible path between every terminal and station.

Check what happens if you miss the flight

Before booking a two-airport connection, ask the ticket issuer whether it is protected and what support applies after an inbound delay. With separate bookings, get each provider’s change and no-show terms rather than assuming one airline will move the other ticket.

An airport-change connection also involves a landside journey. Confirm that your travel documents and entry permission allow that journey. An available train or a generous time gap does not establish permission to enter mainland China.

If the first flight is delayed, contact the onward carrier or booking provider while you still have time to act. Ask about options before its change or check-in deadline. Do not try to recover lost time by following unsolicited drivers or ignoring official directions.

Save one transfer note offline

Record both flight numbers, airports, terminals, airline cutoffs, baggage instructions, the intended transport and its current operating window. Add a road fallback and the provider’s support contact from your own booking.

For a PVG arrival followed by a hotel stay, use the Pudong Airport guide instead of treating this airport-change worksheet as a city-arrival itinerary. For a same-day flight connection, keep the departure deadline as the fixed point and fit everything else around it.
