Wrong Name or Passport Number on a China Train Ticket: What to Do

If a China train ticket appears to have the wrong name or passport number, compare the issued ticket’s passenger details with the original passport and contact 12306 or your booking provider promptly. Editing a saved passenger profile is not proof that an existing ticket has changed. Do not wait for the boarding gate to investigate a known mismatch.

Source-based guide checked on 27 October 2026. It covers a possible identity error on a mainland railway booking, not a guarantee of correction, refund or permission to board. Cross-border services can add separate document requirements.

Find out which record is wrong

Put three things side by side: the passport you will carry, the saved passenger record, and the current issued-ticket details. Check each traveller separately if one person booked for a group.

Look for the passenger’s full recorded name, document type and document number. Keep the train number and travel date visible so you do not compare the passport against another passenger or a cancelled order.

These are different situations:

  • A profile error before purchase: correct it through the platform’s permitted process before paying.
  • A possible error on an issued ticket: ask about that specific ticket and what remedy is available.
  • An identity-verification problem: follow the current verification instructions; payment alone does not explain the verification status.
  • A reader or gate problem with otherwise matching records: ask staff to check the document and booking; do not assume every failed scan means the name is wrong.

This distinction prevents an unhelpful fix, such as changing a contact name while leaving the ticket’s passenger information untouched.

What the railway’s published rules say

The 12306 English FAQ describes real-name ticketing and requires the valid identity document used to purchase an e-ticket for station entry, exit and boarding. It also distinguishes adding a passenger’s accurate identity details from the account holder making the purchase. The person who pays need not be the traveller, but the ticket must identify the traveller correctly.

The railway’s Chinese ticket-purchasing FAQ, questions 10–11, says a name cannot be changed after purchase and directs passengers with incorrect identity information to refund the ticket under the applicable rules. That differs from changing a date, station or train. Ask official support how the rule applies to your exact order before taking an irreversible step.

A passport renewal, an unusual name format and a simple number typo are not necessarily the same case. Explain exactly what differs. This guide does not supply a universal punctuation, middle-name or character-transliteration workaround.

Contact the channel that issued your ticket

For a booking made directly with 12306, use its official support or a staffed railway ticket/service counter. Have the original passport and the order information available. If you used another booking provider, contact that provider through the reservation you made and ask it to confirm the ticket’s actual passenger data and available remedy.

Ask concrete questions:

  1. Is the discrepancy in the issued ticket, the profile, or only the way a screen displays the name?
  2. Does the passenger’s record satisfy the current identity requirements?
  3. If it does not, what must happen to this ticket before departure?
  4. What fee and deadline apply, and is replacement travel available?
  5. After the action, where can I read the final passenger details and ticket status?

Do not rely on “other people boarded with this” from a forum. Staff need the actual document and order to assess your situation.

Avoid losing your journey while fixing the record

If support says a refund and new purchase are required, check the available travel options and applicable terms before cancelling. A refunded seat is not a reservation for you to buy it again. Do not assume a replacement will have the same fare, train or class.

Tell support if you have a critical onward flight, hotel arrival or another train. That context helps you compare alternatives, but it does not create an exception to identity rules or guarantee compensation.

After any permitted correction, refund or replacement, reopen the order and read its current status. Save the new confirmation and distinguish it from the cancelled one. Review any return or onward tickets separately; fixing one booking does not establish that the others are correct.

The 12306 booking guide covers the wider booking process. Use this article for the identity problem rather than restarting registration unnecessarily.

If departure is close or a gate will not read the passport

Go to staffed assistance early with the original passport and booking reference. Show the exact issue without repeatedly trying different gates or changing account details in a queue.

A useful sentence is 请帮我核对一下车票上的姓名和护照号码。 — “Please help me check the name and passport number on the train ticket.” For a reader problem, use 我的护照无法通过闸机,请问人工通道在哪里? — “My passport will not work at the gate; where is the staffed channel?”

Those phrases request help; they do not assert that the ticket is valid or that staff can alter it. Follow the current station instructions and allow time for investigation.

If the departure has already been missed, the issue now includes the ticket’s travel status as well as identity. Use the missed-train guide and contact the railway or issuer promptly. Do not assume an identity problem automatically provides a free change.

Keep a private record of the resolution

Retain the order reference, support response, current ticket details and any refund or replacement record. Send identity documents only through the provider’s verified process when required. Redact document numbers and personal details before sharing a question publicly.

Before your next purchase, compare every passenger record with the travel document again. The useful final check is the issued ticket plus the passport you will carry, not merely a successful payment notification.
