Buses in China: City Transit and Long-Distance Coaches

“Bus” can mean two very different systems in China. City buses are local public transport, often paid with cash, a transit card or a city-specific QR code. Long-distance coaches depart from passenger transport stations, may use real-name ticketing, and are useful for county towns, scenic areas and routes that rail does not serve directly.

Start by identifying which system you need. The Chinese term 公交车 usually refers to an urban bus, while 长途汽车 or 客运 points to an intercity coach. A railway station (火车站) and a coach station (汽车客运站) are not interchangeable.

Quick decision: bus, coach or train?

• Use a city bus for neighbourhoods beyond the metro or for a direct local route.
• Use a long-distance coach when the rail station is far from the final town or attraction, or no useful train exists.
• Use a train when the rail route is direct, frequent and easier to book with a passport.
• Use an airport coach only after checking the airport’s current stop and timetable.

Search the complete journey, not only the first leg. A train to a nearby city plus a local shuttle may be easier than a direct coach, while a coach may avoid a long transfer from an outlying high-speed station. Compare the exact date on official operator channels.

Taking a city bus

China’s State Council guide says foreign travellers can use RMB cash, bus cards or Alipay on city buses, with the available method depending on the city and operator. Cash buses may not give change. QR transport codes can require identity verification and a city selection before first use.

A practical sequence is:

1. confirm the route number and direction at the stop;
2. save the Chinese name of the destination and a nearby stop;
3. prepare the city’s transit QR code or small cash before boarding;
4. scan or pay according to the vehicle’s sign;
5. watch the live map and request the stop if the route requires it;
6. scan again on exit only when the local system instructs you to do so.

The payment interface can move after an app update. Set up mobile payment using the Alipay guide for foreign visitors, but keep cash as a backup rather than assuming one nationwide bus QR code works everywhere.

When a long-distance coach is useful

Coaches fill gaps between the national railway and smaller destinations. They can also link airports, county centres and scenic areas. The advantage is often the arrival point, not speed: a coach station in town can be more useful than a high-speed railway station far outside it.

Before choosing a coach, verify:

• the exact departure station, because a city can have several;
• the destination station, not only the city name;
• whether the service is direct or makes intermediate stops;
• the operator’s luggage rule and whether large bags go in the hold;
• the last departure and refund conditions;
• the onward route from the arrival station.

Do not copy an old fare or timetable into the plan. Road services can change after a new railway opens, during holidays or when an operator restructures a route.

Buying an intercity coach ticket

Online booking is less standardised than China Railway. A 2026 answer from the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Transport notes that some long-distance booking platforms require a mainland Chinese phone number for SMS verification. That is route- and platform-specific, but it explains why a foreign passport and overseas number may fail even when the coach itself is operating.

The staffed station counter is the clearest fallback. Bring the original passport that will be used for travel, show the destination in Chinese and ask staff to confirm the departure time and arrival station. Beijing’s intercity coach rules explicitly recognise valid foreign passports for real-name tickets; procedures elsewhere should be checked with the local station.

Arrive with enough time for ticketing, identity checks and baggage screening. Do not claim a precise universal buffer—large holiday stations and small county terminals behave differently.

If rail is a viable alternative, check the official 12306 process for foreign travellers before committing to the coach. Rail booking is more centralised and may be easier to verify in advance.

At the coach station

Match the ticket to three things: station, departure gate and vehicle or route number. Keep the passport accessible through boarding. A sign may change gates close to departure, so follow station displays and announcements rather than waiting only at the first printed gate.

Luggage placed under the coach may be out of sight during stops. Remove passports, money, electronics, medicine and fragile items before handing over a bag. Label the bag with a reachable contact method, and confirm that you are collecting it at the correct stop.

Airport and scenic-area buses

Airport coaches are operator-specific. Stops described by a hotel blog may move, and the English translation of a stop may not match the sign. Use the airport’s current transport page and save the Chinese stop name.

Scenic-area shuttles may be sold separately from admission or included only in certain ticket combinations. Read the current attraction notice rather than assuming that a “bus ticket” covers every segment.

Safety and comfort

Use a licensed service departing from an identifiable station or official stop. Wear the seat belt when one is provided, keep the aisle clear and follow staff instructions at rest stops. Do not board an unmarked vehicle offered outside a station as a substitute for a cancelled service.

Motion sickness, limited rest stops and road delays matter more on longer routes. Carry water and necessary medicine within any security restrictions, but avoid planning a tight onward train or flight after a road journey.

Frequently asked questions

Can foreign visitors pay for city buses with Alipay?

Many cities support an Alipay transport code after setup and identity verification, but coverage and scanning rules vary. Cash or a local transit card remains a useful fallback.

Do I need a passport for a long-distance coach?

Real-name coach routes may require the original travel document used to buy the ticket. Beijing explicitly accepts foreign passports; verify the local station’s rule elsewhere.

Can I book every coach online?

No. Platforms are fragmented, and some require a mainland phone number. A staffed station counter is the practical fallback.

Are coaches cheaper than trains?

Sometimes, but fare alone is a weak comparison. Include the distance to both stations, luggage, journey time, refund terms and the final transfer.
