China Train Tickets: Checks Before You Book
Editorial update: 21 October 2026. Kevin Fan, editorial contact. Source-based planning guidance; no first-hand booking or property inspection is claimed.
Start with the full station names and passenger document, then compare departures. A faster train can be a poor choice if its station adds a long transfer. RelaxInChina provides planning information; the railway or booking provider handles ticket sales, payment, fulfilment, changes and refunds.
1. Save the complete station pair
Large cities can have several separate stations. Copy the departure and arrival names in Chinese as well as English. Shanghai and Shanghai Hongqiao are different railway stations; Futian Station and Futian Checkpoint are different destinations. Compare the trip from your hotel to the correct departure entrance and from the arrival station to your actual destination.
The Shenzhen station guide includes bilingual station names and a driver card. For the overall process, start with China high-speed rail: booking and boarding.
2. Identify what the seller is accepting
A request, waitlist entry or advance order is not the same as an issued ticket. Read the status and fulfilment deadline before arranging a non-refundable connection. Confirm the travel date, train number, station pair, seat class and each passenger’s ticket after issuance. Availability and sale times must be checked for your chosen train.
Use official 12306 as a direct booking option. The 12306 English guide explains the interface. A third-party seller may offer a different language or support process, but compare its total charge and the party responsible for changes.
3. Prepare the passenger details
Use the document type and name format required by the channel you actually book with. Check spelling, document validity and passenger selection before paying. Carry the original valid document used for the booking. A photograph of a passport or itinerary printout is not a substitute for the required original document under the normal e-ticket process.
Read the official booking and e-ticket FAQ for the rules applying to your transaction. Ask official support when a name or document is rejected; do not invent a different identity to fit a form.
4. Compare the whole cost and recovery options
- Separate the railway fare from any service fee and optional add-ons.
- Check the payment currency and any issuer conversion charge.
- Identify when the ticket will be issued and how an unsuccessful request is handled.
- Read change and refund conditions before purchasing; provider fees may be treated separately.
- Check the support route for a missed departure or a disrupted connection.
The 12306 changes and refunds FAQ describes official-channel rules. Do not assume the same workflow applies to a ticket bought through another seller.
5. Keep a departure-day record
Save the full station name, date, train number, departure time, carriage and seat offline. Keep the required document accessible. Read the current gate and boarding instructions at the station rather than relying on an old screenshot. If a reader does not accept your document, use staffed assistance.
