A useful China travel app setup is smaller than most lists suggest. Start with one payment app, one map, the official rail channel, a ride-hailing option and a connection plan. Add translation and booking tools only when they solve a real need on your itinerary.
Set up the important accounts before departure. App interfaces, identity checks, supported cards and language options change, so open each app on the phone you will carry and confirm the current prompts rather than relying on an old screenshot.

This is a toolkit, not a promise that every function will work for every passport, phone or card. Keep one non-app fallback for payment, directions and transport.
Payment: set up one app, then keep a fallback
China’s official guide for overseas visitors says foreigners can register Alipay, Weixin Pay or UnionPay with a foreign or Chinese phone number and follow the in-app process to bind supported cards. It also warns that card brands, limits and fees can vary by product and that the current service agreement controls.
Complete identity and card checks before you leave home if the app asks for them. Then make a small test payment only when you are in a normal purchase situation. Never scan a QR code from an unsolicited message, and do not let a stranger take control of your phone during setup.

Trains and rides: use official or clearly identified channels
China Railway states that its 12306 English website and app support ticket purchase with an accepted foreign passport after identity verification. The English site also supports changes and refunds within its published service rules. Names and passport numbers must match the travel document exactly.
For local rides, China’s official living guide identifies DiDi Greater China and ride-hailing functions in Alipay and WeChat as options for foreign visitors. Check the pickup pin, vehicle plate and destination before boarding. Maps: save the Chinese name, not only an English pin
Map coverage and search quality vary by app and region. A place that appears under an English nickname may be listed under its Chinese name, a gate name or a nearby entrance. Before each travel day, save:
- the destination name in Chinese characters;
- its street address or station exit;
- a screenshot of the final few blocks;
- the hotel’s Chinese name and phone number;
- a second map or a written route for critical transfers.
Do not assume a map’s fastest route is the safest or that a pin identifies the correct entrance. Compare the Chinese address with the attraction’s or hotel’s official message, especially for mountain gates, railway stations and large compounds.
Translation and communication
Choose a translation tool that can store the languages you need offline. Camera translation is useful for menus and signs, but it can misread prices, warnings and proper names. For anything consequential, show the original text to staff or ask for clarification.
WeChat is widely used for messaging and mini-programs, but account registration and feature availability can vary. Add a hotel or travel companion only through a contact method you can independently verify. Keep your booking references and emergency contacts outside any single app.
Connectivity: decide before downloading everything else
Your connection may be home-carrier roaming, a travel eSIM, a local SIM or Wi-Fi. Those products differ in phone-number support, identity checks, coverage, routing and access conditions. A plan marketed for “China” is not a guarantee that every foreign app or website will be reachable.
Check that the phone is unlocked, that the plan supports the mainland cities on your route, and that activation instructions are available offline. Follow Chinese law and the provider’s current terms. This guide does not recommend tools or steps intended to bypass local network controls.
A 20-minute setup order
- Update the phone and the apps you already trust.
- Confirm account recovery details and save backup codes securely.
- Install the chosen payment app and complete any required verification.
- Register for 12306 if you will travel by train.
- Save your first hotel, station and attraction addresses in Chinese.
- Install and test the connection plan according to the provider’s instructions.
- Store tickets, insurance details and passport copies in an offline, protected location.
- Pack a power bank that complies with the carrier’s current transport rules.
Avoid adding fifteen unfamiliar apps at once. More accounts create more permissions, passwords and failure points. Install what your itinerary needs and remove unnecessary permissions after the trip.
