The most useful Hainan travel guide starts with route shape, not a resort list. Haikou and Wenchang anchor the north, Wanning and Lingshui make an east-coast corridor, and Sanya is the southern beach base. A one-way trip between Haikou and Sanya usually gives the island more variety than spending every night in one bay.
Separate three decisions before booking: the immigration rule that covers your full China itinerary, the part of Hainan you actually want to see, and the weather backup that protects flights, marine trips and beach days.
Check the entry rule for your whole itinerary
Hainan’s regional visa-free policy is useful but not universal. The National Immigration Administration says ordinary-passport holders from 59 listed countries may enter through open Hainan ports and remain within Hainan Province for up to 30 days for specified short stays, including tourism and business. It does not cover work or study.
Do not apply that summary to yourself without checking the current official list, passport type, purpose and route. In particular, a Hainan-only permission should not be treated as authority to continue to another mainland province. If the trip includes Guangzhou, Beijing, Shanghai or another mainland stop, identify the rule or visa that covers the whole journey before buying non-refundable tickets.
Airlines and border officers make the operational decision. Keep the official policy page, confirmed onward plan and accommodation details accessible, and check again near departure because immigration policies can change.
Build the trip around Hainan’s three practical zones
North: Haikou and Wenchang
Haikou is the provincial capital and the better base for old arcaded streets, museums and a city-focused start. Wenchang adds coconut-growing landscapes, coastal stops and space-related visitor attractions. This pair suits travellers who want more than a beach-resort holiday.
East: Wanning, Qionghai and Lingshui
The east coast makes a logical middle section between Haikou and Sanya. Hainan’s official tourism routes group Wanning with surfing, Qionghai with Boao and coastal culture, and Lingshui with beaches and marine attractions. Choose one stop according to interest rather than moving hotel every night.

Rail corridor or road loop: choose one transport logic
Rail works well for a one-way east-coast route between the Haikou and Sanya areas. It reduces hotel-to-hotel driving and lets you select one intermediate stop. A road trip is more useful for the west coast or a full island circuit, where railway access does not match every scenic stop. Do not assume that a coastal-highway itinerary is a continuous beach drive. Mixing both systems can work: rail between major east-coast bases, then a licensed local vehicle for a specific inland or coastal excursion. Avoid booking a chain of non-refundable transfers that leaves no weather margin.

A six-day Hainan itinerary without backtracking
This route provides city, coast and a slower beach finish:
- Arrive in Haikou and keep the first day local.
- Explore Haikou or make a focused Wenchang excursion, depending on transport and opening notices.
- Travel south and stay in one east-coast base such as Wanning or Qionghai.
- Use a flexible coast, culture or nature day; cancel marine activity if official warnings or local operators suspend it.
- Continue to Sanya and settle into the bay that fits your hotel style and walking needs.
- Keep the final day near Sanya, protecting the flight rather than adding a distant island return.
Add nights when a resort stay is the purpose of the trip. If you only have four days, choose Haikou plus one east-coast stop or go directly to Sanya; do not force the full island into the schedule.
Weather and sea conditions need a live decision
Hainan’s tropical setting does not guarantee beach conditions on a particular day. Heat, heavy rain, wind and tropical weather can affect flights, ferries, roads and managed swimming areas. Check a short-range official forecast and local operating notice, then keep at least one activity that can move.
Swim only where the area is managed and follow flags, barriers and lifeguard instructions. A calm-looking photograph cannot establish currents or visibility. If a boat or watersports operator cancels for weather, treat that as a safety decision rather than an itinerary failure.

Pack for transfers as well as beaches

Hainan began island-wide special customs operations on 18 December 2025. The State Council’s announcement said business and tourism travel to the island would remain unchanged, with no additional documents required because of that customs operation. This is a goods-and-customs framework, not a substitute for the entry rule that applies to your passport.
Duty-free categories, allowances, collection procedures and shop eligibility can change. Check the current customs or official retailer terms before planning a purchase, and compare the final price rather than assuming every product is cheaper.
Food and local context beyond the resort
Hainan meals include chicken, rice, noodles, tropical produce, coffee and seafood. Ask whether seafood is priced per item, per plate or by weight, and confirm the unit and cooking charge before ordering. A clear menu is more useful than a broad promise about what is “cheap.”
Haikou, Wenchang and the east-coast towns add everyday city and island life that a resort corridor cannot show. Visit villages, markets and cultural sites as working places. Ask before photographing people closely, observe access signs and avoid presenting local ethnic traditions as entertainment detached from their communities.

How many days should I spend in Hainan?
Six or seven days is useful for Haikou, one east-coast stop and Sanya. Four days works better as one region than as a rushed island circuit.
Can every foreign visitor use Hainan’s 30-day visa-free policy?
