Nanjing South Railway Station (南京南站) is the city’s main high-speed rail hub at No. 98 Yulan Road in Yuhuatai District. It is not the same place as Nanjing Railway Station beside Xuanwu Lake. Confirm the Chinese station name on the booking before choosing a metro route, taxi pin or hotel.
Four metro services meet at Nanjing South: Lines 1 and 3, the S1 airport line and the S3 line. The railway hall is large, so the useful planning unit is not “the station” but a sequence: correct entrance, security, waiting hall, ticket-check gate and platform.
Before arriving: read four fields
Open the current 12306 order and note:
- Station:
南京南must appear, not only “Nanjing.” - Train number: use it to find the live departure board.
- Departure time: allow for security and walking, not just the train time.
- Ticket-check gate: follow the current order and station display; gate assignments can change.
Avoid an old blog rule that maps “low gate numbers” to one entrance and “high numbers” to another. The live departure board and bilingual overhead signs are better evidence than a fixed numbering shortcut.

Arriving by metro
Nanjing’s official sources identify Nanjing South as an interchange for Lines 1, 3, S1 and S3.
- Line 1: useful for central Nanjing and Nanjing Railway Station.
- Line 3: useful for several central and south-city connections.
- S1: the airport line toward Nanjing Lukou International Airport.
- S3: serves the southwest corridor.
When leaving the metro, follow signs for 铁路出发 (railway departures), then the north or south departure area shown by the live station guidance. Do not choose an exit number from memory: construction, passenger-flow controls and the starting platform can change the best path.
For a flight connection, check the current S1 first/last train and airport terminal information. A direct line does not mean a guaranteed connection late at night or during a temporary operating change.
Taxi and ride-hailing pickup
Use the designated taxi queue or the ride-hailing zone shown in the current app and on-site signs. Nanjing South has multiple levels and approach roads; a generic “Nanjing South Station” pin may put the driver on a different level from the passenger.
Send the driver the exact zone, level and pickup number. If the app changes the assigned area, follow the new instruction instead of walking toward an old screenshot. The same rule applies to hotel drop-off: tell the driver whether the current sign sends the train to a north or south departure entrance.
Boarding with a foreign passport
China Railway uses real-name ticketing. Carry the original passport used for the booking. Current 12306 guidance says passengers show the valid identity document for station entry, ticket check and boarding; an itinerary sheet or reimbursement receipt is not the ticket.
A robust sequence is:
- Arrive with enough time for queues and a long walk.
- Present the booking passport at identity inspection.
- Put baggage through security.
- Find the train number and current gate on the departure board.
- Wait near that gate and watch for status changes.
- Use a staffed channel if the automatic reader does not recognise the passport.
China Railway does not promise one universal gate-closing interval for every station. Its English FAQ says checks stop before departure and passengers should follow the station announcement. Treat a blog’s “three minutes” or “five minutes” as unsafe planning.
Transferring between trains
Look for 便捷换乘 or 换乘 signs after leaving the first train. A convenient-transfer route may return eligible connecting passengers to the waiting area without a full station exit, but the available path depends on the arriving platform, current passenger controls and ticket status.
Allow enough time to find the next gate and pass any required check. A connection on separate orders does not create a promise that the second train will wait if the first service is delayed. When the margin is tight, ask uniformed staff before following the crowd toward 出站 (exit).
Luggage, food and assistance
Do not build an itinerary around an old locker location or price. Storage operators, opening hours and payment methods can change. Check current station signage or ask the staffed service desk, then verify the closing time before leaving a bag.
China Railway’s English FAQ currently lists 20 kg of free cabin luggage for most adult passengers, with size limits that differ between traditional and EMU trains. A permitted item can still be awkward in a busy waiting hall, so keep passport, phone, medicine and the next-train details in a smaller bag.
Food and retail choices change with tenancy and operating hours. Bring a simple backup snack for an early or late departure rather than depending on a named restaurant.
Passengers who need accessibility, nursing or boarding assistance should use the staffed service desk. Current 12306 materials list service provisions at major stations, but exact locations and eligibility should be confirmed on arrival.
Nanjing South or Nanjing Railway Station?
The municipal English transport page describes Nanjing South as the high-speed hub for major corridors, while Nanjing Railway Station handles a different mix of services. The train number and booking station decide where to go; neither station name can be substituted.
