Mandarin Phrases for Travelers: A Practical China Cheat Sheet

You do not need conversational Mandarin to make a trip work. A small set of clear phrases, backed up by Chinese characters on your phone, can solve common restaurant, payment, taxi and hotel tasks. The goal is not perfect pronunciation; it is to make the next action unambiguous.

This page uses Hanyu Pinyin, the standard Romanization system described by ISO 7098, to show pronunciation. Pinyin is a learning aid, while the Chinese text is the most dependable item to show another person. Save the sections you need offline and replace generic addresses with the exact Chinese name of your hotel or destination.

First-line communication phrases

Chinese Pinyin English When to use it
你好 nǐ hǎo Hello A polite opening
不好意思 bù hǎoyìsi Excuse me / sorry To get attention or acknowledge a small inconvenience
我听不懂 wǒ tīng bù dǒng I do not understand When spoken language is moving past you
请说慢一点 qǐng shuō màn yìdiǎn Please speak more slowly When you may understand a slower version
请写下来 qǐng xiě xiàlái Please write it down To get characters, a number or an address you can check
请再说一遍 qǐng zài shuō yí biàn Please say it again For a short repeat

If repeating the phrase does not help, switch methods: show the Chinese sentence, open a map, point to the item or ask the person to type. Speaking louder does not fix a vocabulary gap.

Food and restaurant phrases

Chinese Pinyin English
这个 zhège This one
不要辣 bú yào là No chilli / not spicy
少辣 shǎo là Less spicy
我吃素 wǒ chī sù I eat vegetarian food
不要肉汤 bú yào ròu tāng No meat stock
买单 mǎidān The bill, please

Pointing to “这个” is useful for a pictured dish, but confirm quantity before the order is sent. “不要辣” may not be possible for a prepared broth or sauce. “我吃素” is an opening rather than a full ingredient specification; strict vegetarians should also name stock, lard, seafood, egg or dairy according to their diet. The Chinese dishes guide helps identify menu categories, and the food-ordering guide explains QR menus and translation fallbacks.

Payment phrases

Chinese Pinyin English
可以用支付宝吗? kěyǐ yòng Zhīfùbǎo ma? Can I use Alipay?
可以刷卡吗? kěyǐ shuākǎ ma? Can I pay by card?
可以付现金吗? kěyǐ fù xiànjīn ma? Can I pay cash?
多少钱? duōshao qián? How much is it?
付款成功了吗? fùkuǎn chénggōng le ma? Did the payment go through?

Do not send a second payment simply because the first screen is unfamiliar. Show the confirmation page and ask “付款成功了吗?” The Alipay guide for foreign visitors covers setup and current app checks; payment acceptance still depends on the merchant and account state.

Taxi and transport phrases

Chinese Pinyin English
请去这个地址 qǐng qù zhège dìzhǐ Please go to this address
请在这里停 qǐng zài zhèlǐ tíng Please stop here
这是哪个站? zhè shì nǎge zhàn? Which station is this?
地铁站在哪里? dìtiě zhàn zài nǎli? Where is the metro station?
人工服务在哪里? réngōng fúwù zài nǎli? Where is the staffed service desk?

Always show the full destination in Chinese. A hotel brand may have several branches, and a railway station name without its directional word—North, South, East or West—can lead to the wrong terminal. Pin the map location and keep the address screenshot available offline.

Hotel and everyday phrases

Chinese Pinyin English
我要办理入住 wǒ yào bànlǐ rùzhù I would like to check in
我有预订 wǒ yǒu yùdìng I have a reservation
请帮我写下地址 qǐng bāng wǒ xiě xià dìzhǐ Please write down the address for me
洗手间在哪里? xǐshǒujiān zài nǎli? Where is the toilet?
有无线网吗? yǒu wúxiànwǎng ma? Is Wi-Fi available?

For toilets, signs may use 洗手间, 卫生间 or 厕所. The toilets in China guide covers symbols and practical expectations. At check-in, prepare the reservation name and confirmation rather than expecting the spoken sentence alone to locate a booking.

Build a phone-ready phrase card

Create one offline note with four parts:

  1. the Chinese name and full address of each hotel;
  2. the Chinese names of the airports and railway stations in the itinerary;
  3. dietary sentences that reflect your actual exclusions;
  4. the core phrases from this page in large text.

Keep screenshots as well as copied text. A screenshot still works if an app signs out or a connection fails. Do not store passport, payment or other sensitive numbers in a phrase card that you routinely hand to strangers.

Frequently asked questions

Should I show Chinese characters or read the pinyin aloud?

Try the spoken phrase, but keep the Chinese text ready. Showing the characters is often faster when pronunciation or noise makes speech unclear.

Does “bu yao la” guarantee a dish has no chilli?

No. A prepared sauce or broth may already contain chilli. Ask before ordering and choose another dish if the kitchen cannot adjust it.

Which phrase is most useful for a taxi?

“请去这个地址” plus the exact Chinese address and a map pin is more dependable than saying an English place name.

Can this phrase list handle emergencies?

No. It is a routine travel cheat sheet, not an emergency or medical communication tool. Use official emergency channels and professional language help when stakes are high.

Takeaway

The best travel phrase is the one that produces a clear next step. Keep the Chinese characters, pinyin and context together; move from speech to text or a map when needed; and save destination and dietary details offline. A dozen dependable phrases used calmly are more useful than a long list you cannot retrieve at the counter.
