Before booking Zhengyangmen, decide which building you want to enter: the city gate tower, 正阳门城楼, or the arrow tower, 正阳门箭楼. They are separate structures with separate admission arrangements. “Qianmen” may also mean the surrounding commercial streets, so that name alone is not enough to identify a ticket.
This guide focuses on choosing and entering the towers. Use the Qianmen Street guide for a neighbourhood walk; walking along the street does not include tower admission.

Which visit should you choose?
Choose the city gate tower if you want that building’s exhibition and the opportunity to understand its relationship to the square and historic axis from inside the structure. Choose the arrow tower if that is the defensive building you particularly want to study. Check the current exhibition descriptions and open areas before deciding whether both deserve places in your schedule.
If you have only a short session, one confirmed interior plus time outside is a more resilient plan than two tightly connected bookings. Without admission, limit the visit to permitted public areas; do not treat an exterior view as equivalent to entering a tower.
The Beijing Central Axis heritage operator’s current page lists both towers as normally open Tuesday–Sunday, 09:00–17:00, with last admission at 16:30 and Monday closure except statutory holidays. Special notices can change that pattern. It describes arrow-tower admission as free during its trial operation, with real-name reservations; check the live booking product rather than treating that wording as a permanent free-ticket promise.
City gate tower: the published booking conditions
Beijing’s 27 July 2026 reopening notice names the official 北京中轴线遗产保护中心 WeChat account. It lists standard adult admission at CNY20 and requires advance reservations for the next day through seven days ahead; there are no same-day or on-site sales. The published release time is 17:00.
The notice accepts passports among the documents for non-mainland visitors. Bring the original document used in the booking and its confirmation, and follow the reserved session. The designated city gate tower entrance is on its west side, reached through square security. A successful reservation for this tower can be used for the square-access check under the notice; do not apply that exception to an arrow-tower or unrelated booking.
Concessions have separate conditions. Budget for standard adult admission unless the current official channel confirms your eligibility. No available reservation means you should change the interior plan, not rely on an unofficial seller claiming guaranteed access.
Arrow tower: use its own booking
Select 正阳门箭楼 explicitly in the operator’s current channel. Confirm its date, document requirements, session and entrance. The fact that both towers share an operator does not turn one reservation into a combined ticket.
Read the final confirmation before paying for associated transport or a tour. If you cannot complete the form with your passport, contact the venue about its assisted process. Do not invent a Chinese identity number or assume a booking made under somebody else’s document will admit you.
What to carry and how to pace the visit
Save the Chinese building name, session, original identity document and entrance information offline. Carry only what you need and read the venue’s current storage requirements. The city gate tower notice identifies narrow steps and warns visitors with limited mobility to assess whether the visit suits them.
Give screening and walking their own time. A station exit near one structure may not put you beside the entrance specified for the other. Follow current signs and staff directions rather than crossing a controlled area because a map draws a short line through it.
Inside, pay attention to the building as well as the display: its orientation, openings and relationship to the surrounding city help explain why it stood here. Follow photography and conservation restrictions, and leave through the designated route rather than assuming you can return to every area.
Combining the towers with central Beijing
Use one reserved visit as the anchor, then add a meal and the surrounding streets. If the square itself is a separate goal, consult the Tiananmen Square guide and your actual access confirmation. A square visit also does not admit you to Tiananmen Gate or the Forbidden City.
For a broader trip, choose a northern or southern section of the historic axis on another day. Fewer well-understood bookings are easier to manage than a series of nearby landmarks with incompatible entrance times.
