Decide on the maglev as a two-part journey
The maglev runs between Pudong Airport and Longyang Road, not the central hotel districts. Its best case is a traveler who wants the engineering experience and can make a simple onward metro or taxi connection. It is less attractive with bulky luggage, a late arrival, or a hotel that requires several interchanges. The Shanghai maglev is really two separate decisions wearing one ticket: a piece of engineering tourism, and a way of getting from Pudong Airport into the city. They deserve different answers. As an experience, there is nothing else like it in commercial service. As airport transport, it wins less often than the internet suggests.
The number almost every guide still prints
The maglev opened in 2003 with a 431 km/h cruising speed, and that figure is welded into a decade of travel blogs, guidebooks and airline magazines.
It has not been accurate since May .
- Current top speed: 300 km/h, on every departure, all day. The old "fast run" windows are gone.
- Journey time: 8 minutes 10 seconds over 29.9 km, up from 7 minutes 20 seconds.
- The in-carriage speedometer climbs to 300, holds it briefly, then eases off. It is still eerily quiet and still weirdly smooth for the speed.
- The awkward corollary: at 300 km/h the maglev is no longer the fastest train you can board in China. A 350 km/h Fuxing on the Beijing–Shanghai line is quicker. If pure velocity is the goal, China’s high-speed network beats it.
None of that makes the ride bad. It makes the marketing dated. Buy the ticket for the levitation technology, not for a speed record it no longer holds.
Payment notes that matter: cash, UnionPay and the Chinese mobile wallets are the reliable options, while foreign-issued cards remain hit-and-miss — set up Alipay before you land. Metro QR codes and the 1-day/3-day metro passes do not cover the maglev; a physical Shanghai Public Transport Card is accepted.
The timetable, and the 20-minute catch

That headway is the hidden cost. The ride is 8 minutes; the wait can be 20. Glance at the departure board before you commit — if you’ve just missed one, Metro Line 2 may genuinely get you moving sooner.
Longyang Road is not downtown
This is the part that turns a fast train into a slow journey. The maglev terminates at Longyang Road in Pudong, roughly 8 km southeast of the Bund. From there you transfer to Metro Lines 2, 7, 16 or 18, haul your bags through the interchange, and add another 20–30 minutes.
The Airport Link Line, which opened on 27 December , is the option most guides still omit. It runs Pudong to Hongqiao at up to 160 km/h in under 40 minutes across seven stations, and it has quietly made the maglev irrelevant for anyone connecting to a domestic flight or a high-speed train out of Hongqiao. You can tap in and out with a public transport card; check the fare at the station.

You’re flying out of Hongqiao — the Airport Link Line is the answer.

Boarding it without fuss
- At Pudong Airport the maglev station sits in the transport hub between Terminals 1 and 2, reached by signed connecting corridors from the terminal.
- Counters and machines are both at the entrance; airport-style security screening applies before the platform.
- Luggage racks are at the ends of each carriage — board early if you have a big case.
- Seats are unreserved in economy and face both directions. Nobody checks.
- At the Longyang Road end, follow signs for Exits 3 and 4 to reach the metro concourse.
