Choose a map app for China that can find your exact destinations and the transport modes you need. Amap is a practical option to investigate on both Android and iPhone; Apple Maps is another option for iPhone users. Do not make Google Maps your only mainland navigation plan. Which map app for China fits your device and journey?
Compare options by the work you need them to do. An app that opens successfully has not yet demonstrated that it can route your particular journey.

Amap English services and Apple Maps in China
Shanghai's municipal visitor service reported expanded Amap multilingual functions in July 2026, including English, hotel and destination preparation, route suggestions and bilingual communication cards. Older advice that Amap is necessarily Chinese-only is therefore an inadequate starting point. At the same time, a government introduction does not prove that every menu, booking function or listing is translated on your device. Check the current app instead of following an untested sequence of taps.
Apple lists Maps features by country and region. Review the functions you actually need—such as transit or turn-by-turn navigation—rather than assuming that every feature available at home is available throughout China. Apple feature availability.
Google Maps in China has three different questions
First, can the service load on your connection? UK travel advice lists Google among permanently blocked services in China. Do not plan an essential arrival around normal access. UK government internet-access guidance.
Second, is the destination record correct? A familiar app can return a business with a similar English name, another branch or an old address. A loading map does not resolve that problem.
Third, does the route reach the correct entrance? An attraction's central pin, a hotel's rear entrance and a railway station's accessible approach can be different destinations for the journey you are making.
Keep those questions separate when troubleshooting. If nothing loads, investigate connectivity. If other apps work but a place cannot be found, investigate the name and address. If the pin is right but the approach looks wrong, check the entrance and local signs. Buying more data is not a solution to every navigation error.
Make a Chinese address card before saving the pin
Start with the hotel's booking confirmation, the venue's official page or the exact station on your ticket. Copy the name and address from that record, not from an AI translation of an English nickname.
Your card should contain:
- The official Chinese name and an English label you recognise.
- The full street address, including the district and branch where applicable.
- The specific terminal, railway station, gate or entrance needed.
- The operator's published phone number, if available.
- A saved image showing the final approach.
- A note describing what the booking actually confirms.
Do not include a passport number or payment details on a card you may hand to a driver. Keep sensitive booking records separately.
For a hotel chain, the branch matters more than the brand. For an airport, the terminal matters more than the city. For rail, use the booked station: “Shanghai” and “Shanghai Hongqiao” are not labels you should casually substitute for one another. If two sources disagree, ask the operator to confirm the current address or entrance. Do not save both pins and leave the decision until you are carrying luggage outside the station.
Rehearse the first journey before departure
A short rehearsal exposes gaps that a generic app list cannot.
- Install the map option from its official distribution channel and check its identity.
- Find the hotel using the Chinese name from the confirmation.
- Compare the result with the full address and branch.
- Inspect the transfer from your booked terminal or station, using the actual arrival time as a planning input.
- Save the destination and address card locally.
- Open those saved materials without a connection to confirm you can retrieve them.
A predeparture rehearsal is not a mainland field test. Route availability, current service and location-sensitive functions can still differ after arrival. Its purpose is to make sure you have the right records and know how to find them.
After landing, test the actual connection and route while you are still at a staffed point. If the app cannot help, show the address card to airport information staff or a clearly identified taxi service. Resolve the destination before accepting a journey.
Check the route mode, last connection and final entrance
A metro route is more than a line number. Inspect the direction of travel, interchange, final stop and walk from the exit. A staircase, closed gate or distant interchange can make a route unsuitable for someone with luggage or limited mobility.
If the last leg depends on a bus or train near the end of service, verify the operator's current timetable. An app estimate is not a guarantee that you will board the last departure. Allow enough time to switch to the alternative you have prepared.
For ride-hailing, compare the map destination with the one shown in the ride app before confirming. Pickup points also need checking: the nearest road on a map may not be a permitted pickup area. Use the actual designated area and confirm the vehicle details in the booking.
On foot, do not follow an apparent shortcut through a closed, restricted or unsafe-looking area. A generated route does not override barriers, security instructions or access notices. If the route conflicts with local signs, stop and ask for help.
A China travel map needs an offline layer
Offline preparation means more than pressing a download button. Google's own help says downloads are unavailable in some countries or regions and that offline navigation does not provide public-transit, cycling or walking directions. When the pin or search result is wrong
If an English search finds nothing, use the Chinese name from the operator's record. If it finds several results, compare district, branch and street address. If a driver or staff member points out a mismatch, return to that authoritative record rather than defending the app's first result.

Official Shanghai visitor information describes multilingual services including English. Check the current app on your device; that description is not a guarantee of full translation of every function.
Is Apple Maps better than Amap in China?
This guide has no measured accuracy or speed comparison. Choose by device, required route mode, language and whether the exact destination can be verified. Keep a second path for essential transfers.
Can Google Maps be my only map?
That is a fragile mainland plan. Prepare a locally supported option and offline addresses, even if you can open Google Maps on a particular connection.
Does a data eSIM fix a wrong location pin?
